"Son"day 12/27/09 Acts Chapter 2

Well this morning is full of questions for me.  I hope that some of you can give me some insight!!  Who wrote the book of Acts?  It is right after the gospels??  Please someone fill me in!

Chapter 2:

1 What is Pentecost??

6 I find this interesting that they were speaking to all the people in their own language...

11..... we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

18Even on my servents, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days and they will prophesy.   (Are you a servent??)

17-21 prophecy fullfilled from Joel 2:28-32

25-28 prophecy fullfilled from Psalm 16:8-11

34,35 prophecy frullfilled for  Psalm 110:1

38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sinss. And you will recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit.

44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. (Wow what a thought!)

  1. Mona...while Acts is placed right after the Gospels in the Bible, that isn't necessarily the same time frame of the events that are written about....One of the things I found unusual as I began reading the Bible a few years ago was the fact that the "events" written about aren't always in the order in which they happened, AND there are instances when MANY YEARS can pass between some verses in the same book.....I have a chronological list of the passages if you'd like a copy...Lori gave it to us in one of our Wednesday night classes. There is also a chronological Bible but I think that would confuse me even more!!

Luke is the author of Acts....I love that God used a Gentile to write such key books in the Bible. His role as a physician would likely have meant that the people who listened to him speak----and/or read his words---would have seen him as a man of knowledge and one who was to be respected/trusted.

Pentecost was one of the major Jewish festivals. It came 50 days after Passover and was held to offer thanks for the harvests that were gathered. Jews from various nations gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate this festival. That meant there were Jews from all over the world who would have heard Peter when he spoke in public. They would then have been able to take his messages back to their part of the world--- spreading the message of Christ to areas where the apostles might never have been able to travel to. In the New Testament Pentecost is representative of the time the Holy Spirit came down upon the people.

verse 6: I love this passage......no question that it would have taken a miracle for all of these people to hear the same message in their own languages AND they must have been amazed that the language was being spoken by people who were unfamiliar with it.

verses 42-47 speak so clearly to the importance of joining in fellowship with other believers. They also speak to the fact that faith is definitely not just a Sunday thing, it's a way of life-------verse 46 "They worshiped together at the Temple EACH DAY...." Do we leave our faith at the door on Sunday or do we take it with us through each and every day??
